Mercury Conjunction Jupiter

0° · major aspect · neutral · default orb ±8°

Joining the significations of speech, number, and trade to those of law, faith, and increase, Mercury conjunct Jupiter is read by the tradition as the scribe in the judge's chamber. Classical and medieval sources tie the pair to jurists, clerks of great institutions, publishers of doctrine, translators of scripture, and commerce conducted at scale; Lilly gives such mixtures honesty in dealing and a religious or philosophical cast of mind. The lesser significator of reason meets the greater significator of judgment, and the literature reads breadth added to detail, particulars gathered under principle.

Traditional reading

The dignities set these two at odds even as the aspect joins them: Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, opposite signs, so each planet is in detriment in the other's home, and Jupiter is further in fall in Virgo where Mercury is exalted. Mercury applies, being far the faster. Sect can unite them in a day chart when Mercury rises before the Sun, joining the diurnal benefic to a diurnal Mercury, a configuration the Hellenistic authors count favorable for advocacy and letters.

Classical reading

Ptolemy treats conjunction as bodies sharing the same degree. Nature depends on the joined planets - benefic with Jupiter, malefic with Mars or Saturn.

Modern reading

Modern reading: fusion of two principles. The combined energies act as one unit, for better or worse depending on the bodies involved.
