☿ Mercury ☌ Conjunction ♀ Venus
0° · major aspect · neutral · default orb ±8°
Mercury and Venus never separate by more than about seventy-six degrees, so their conjunction is frequent and their major hard aspects impossible. Classical sources read the meeting as speech joined to grace: eloquence, poetry, song, and the persuasive arts, with commerce in ornament and the crafts of beauty added by the medieval authors. Ptolemy's temperament chapters make Mercury-Venus mixtures musical and companionable, inclined to wit without malice. The pair signifies diplomats, artisans, and writers of pleasing things, calculation sweetened by charm and desire articulated in fine language rather than merely felt.
Traditional reading
Mercury, the faster of the two inferior planets, ordinarily applies, though retrogradation frequently reverses their order, a variability the horary authors track with care. Venus belongs to the nocturnal sect while Mercury takes his sect from solar phase, so the pair can share a team or split. Reception is close at hand: Mercury in Taurus or Libra sits in Venus's domiciles, Venus in Gemini in Mercury's, and Mercury holds both domicile and exaltation in Virgo, the sign of Venus's fall, the one sour note the dignities record.
Classical reading
Ptolemy treats conjunction as bodies sharing the same degree. Nature depends on the joined planets - benefic with Jupiter, malefic with Mars or Saturn.
Modern reading
Modern reading: fusion of two principles. The combined energies act as one unit, for better or worse depending on the bodies involved.
