Moon Opposition Mars

180° · major aspect · challenging · default orb ±8°

The Moon set opposite Mars brings the body and the emotions against the planet of heat and strife, a contact the tradition read among the more difficult of lunar configurations. Classical authors assigned Mars the significations of cutting, fever, war, and sudden anger, and set against the Moon's rulership over the body and the passions, the opposition was tied to agitation, conflict, and inflamed feeling. Lilly and the medieval writers noted the pairing in questions of quarrel, accident, and disturbance of the household, reading the two bodies as instinct provoked by force across the width of the chart.

Traditional reading

Mars is the nocturnal malefic, less injurious in a night chart where the sect favors it, and the Moon likewise rejoices by night, so the older texts weighed the opposition partly by whether the figure was diurnal or nocturnal. The Moon, the faster body, applies to Mars and perfects the contact. Reception between them could temper the heat. Modern practitioners recast the polarity as emotional reactivity meeting assertive drive, softening the classical language of affliction into a tension between feeling and will, though the traditional reading of the pairing remained frankly cautionary.

Classical reading

Ptolemy lists opposition as one of the five Ptolemaic aspects, formed by the diameter (180°). Classically described as obstructive or confrontational.

Modern reading

Modern reading: polarity and projection. The two bodies pull in opposite directions, asking for balance between contrasting principles.
