☿ Mercury ☌ Conjunction ♂ Mars
0° · major aspect · neutral · default orb ±8°
The conjunction of Mercury with Mars sharpens speech on the whetstone of war: classical sources tie the pair to argument and advocacy, to satire and the cutting word, to engineering, surgery, and every craft that joins calculation to iron. Lilly's Mars-Mercury figures are contentious wits, quick in dispute and quicker in reply; Ptolemy's mixture yields an acute but rash intelligence. The tradition also names fraud among soldiers and litigation pursued with heat, the messenger armed, cleverness given an edge and a target rather than left to play at its leisure.
Traditional reading
Mercury, the swifter body, applies to Mars except when retrograde motion inverts the approach. Sect can favor the pair by night, since Mars leads the nocturnal malefic office and Mercury following the Sun's setting counts nocturnal too, placing both on one team. Reception is thin, though Mercury's domicile Gemini gives Mars no dignity and Mars's signs return the discourtesy; the medieval authors judge the mixture more by temperament, hot and dry choler quickening the mercurial mind toward speed and quarrel alike.
Classical reading
Ptolemy treats conjunction as bodies sharing the same degree. Nature depends on the joined planets - benefic with Jupiter, malefic with Mars or Saturn.
Modern reading
Modern reading: fusion of two principles. The combined energies act as one unit, for better or worse depending on the bodies involved.
