Mercury takes the sect of the planet he is joined to, so with nocturnal Mars the reading leans toward the night, when Mars is in his own sect and least destructive. Mercury, second only to the Moon in speed, applies to the slower Mars and completes the figure. Reception colors it where Mercury lies in Aries or Scorpio, Mars's domiciles, or Mars in Gemini or Virgo. Older authors warned that Mercury takes on the nature of whatever he touches; with Mars even the trine lends the tongue an edge, though the harmonious angle keeps it disciplined rather than rash.
