♀ Venus ☌ Conjunction ♂ Mars
0° · major aspect · neutral · default orb ±8°
Venus conjunct Mars joins the significations of pleasure, concord, and adornment to those of war, heat, and desire's pursuit, and the tradition reads the pair as appetite unified with its object. Classical sources tie the combination to love affairs and their scandals, to artistry executed with force, to partnerships in contentious trades, and to marriages marked by both ardor and quarrel. Ptolemy's mixture of Venus with Mars inclines to passion frankly expressed; the medieval authors add craftsmen in metal and ornament, where the smith's fire is made to serve the jeweler's grace.
Traditional reading
The dignities bind these two in symmetrical estrangement: Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mars rules Scorpio and Aries, opposite signs throughout, so each planet always sits in the other's detriment when at home. Both belong to the nocturnal sect, however, so a night chart holds the pair in sect together, benefic and malefic of the same team. Venus, the faster, applies to Mars. Hellenistic authors read the mutual detriments as an antipathy the shared sect partly reconciles, desire and strife negotiated within one household.
Classical reading
Ptolemy treats conjunction as bodies sharing the same degree. Nature depends on the joined planets - benefic with Jupiter, malefic with Mars or Saturn.
Modern reading
Modern reading: fusion of two principles. The combined energies act as one unit, for better or worse depending on the bodies involved.
