Venus Opposition Mars

180° · major aspect · challenging · default orb ±8°

Few oppositions carry as much traditional freight as Venus against Mars, the significators of love and of strife set at opposite ends of the wheel. Venus governs affection, beauty, harmony, and pleasure; Mars governs desire, heat, and conflict. Classical sources read the contact as attraction and friction bound together, tying it to matters of passion, quarrel between the sexes, and the meeting of tenderness with force. The opposition sharpens the polarity the two bodies already embody, the lesser benefic and the malefic facing each other, so that the pairing was read as desire and discord in a single frame.

Traditional reading

Both belong to the nocturnal sect, and the older texts held that Mars, its malefic, does less harm by night, softening the contact in a night figure. Venus, the faster body, applies to Mars and perfects the aspect. The pair carries a strong doctrine of reception, since each rules a sign where the other takes dignity or detriment, and mutual reception between them was thought to bind their significations closely. Modern practitioners read the opposition as the polarity of love and desire, attraction meeting assertion, a psychological reading that follows naturally from the classical account.

Classical reading

Ptolemy lists opposition as one of the five Ptolemaic aspects, formed by the diameter (180°). Classically described as obstructive or confrontational.

Modern reading

Modern reading: polarity and projection. The two bodies pull in opposite directions, asking for balance between contrasting principles.
