Moon Opposition Venus

180° · major aspect · challenging · default orb ±8°

Two of the tradition's gentler significators meet across the diameter when the Moon opposes Venus. The Moon governs the body, nourishment, and the ebb of feeling; Venus governs love, beauty, harmony, and the pleasures of the senses, and classical sources counted her the lesser benefic. Even set in the obstructive opposition, the pairing was read more as a tension of appetites than as affliction, tied to matters of affection, comfort, adornment, and the domestic sphere. Medieval authors associated the contact with the give and take of desire and contentment, one body seeking what the other already holds.

Traditional reading

Both belong to the nocturnal sect, where Venus and the Moon were held to operate most kindly, so the older texts read even their opposition without much dread. The Moon, faster than Venus, applies to her, perfecting the aspect. Questions of reception could soften the contact further, since each body finds dignity in signs the tradition linked to comfort and delight. Modern writers describe the polarity as a divergence between emotional need and the wish for pleasure or aesthetic harmony, a psychological gloss on what the classical sources treated chiefly as a benefic pairing under mild strain.

Classical reading

Ptolemy lists opposition as one of the five Ptolemaic aspects, formed by the diameter (180°). Classically described as obstructive or confrontational.

Modern reading

Modern reading: polarity and projection. The two bodies pull in opposite directions, asking for balance between contrasting principles.
