What is the Lot of Fortune?

The most important of the lots in the Hellenistic tradition. Measured from the Moon, it is associated with the body, physical circumstances, and the fortunes that arrive without one's deliberate effort. In Greek it is Τύχη (Tyche). The topics it addresses: body, health, material circumstances, livelihood.

How is the Lot of Fortune calculated?

By day: Ascendant + Moon − Sun. By night: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. The two formulas are mirror images, and which one applies depends on the sect of the chart - whether the Sun is above or below the horizon at birth. Getting the sect wrong swaps the formula and moves the lot to a different degree, often a different sign, so a lot quoted without a stated sect cannot be checked.

Does the Fortune lot need an exact birth time?

Yes, and this lot is more time-sensitive than a planet position. The formula is Ascendant + Moon − Sun by day. The Ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes, so an hour of uncertainty moves the Fortune lot about 15 degrees, half a sign or more. The other two terms are the Sun and Moon, which move slowly enough over an hour that they contribute almost nothing to the error - the Ascendant is the whole sensitivity.
