What is the Lot of Spirit?

The counterpart of Fortune, measured from the Sun. It is associated with the intellect, volition, and the things one actively pursues, especially career and reputation. In Greek it is Δαίμων (Daimon). The topics it addresses: mind, action, career, deliberate effort.

How is the Lot of Spirit calculated?

By day: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. By night: Ascendant + Moon − Sun. The two formulas are mirror images, and which one applies depends on the sect of the chart - whether the Sun is above or below the horizon at birth. Getting the sect wrong swaps the formula and moves the lot to a different degree, often a different sign, so a lot quoted without a stated sect cannot be checked.

Does the Spirit lot need an exact birth time?

Yes, and this lot is more time-sensitive than a planet position. The formula is Ascendant + Sun − Moon by day. The Ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes, so an hour of uncertainty moves the Spirit lot about 15 degrees, half a sign or more. The other two terms are the Sun and Moon, which move slowly enough over an hour that they contribute almost nothing to the error - the Ascendant is the whole sensitivity. That also makes this one of the two lots other lots are built on.
