♂ Mars ☍ Opposition ♃ Jupiter
180° · major aspect · challenging · default orb ±8°
Mars opposite Jupiter sets the planet of strife against the greater benefic, and the tradition read the contact as martial energy met by expansion. Mars signifies heat, courage, and conflict; Jupiter signifies abundance, law, and generous scope. Across the diameter older sources described force enlarged, tied to matters of bold enterprise, contention over law or belief, and the swelling of action beyond measure, so that the pairing carried both the promise of vigorous undertaking and the risk of overreach or reckless excess. Because Jupiter tempers Mars, the opposition was read less harshly than the martial contacts with the malefics.
Traditional reading
Mars rejoices in the nocturnal sect while Jupiter belongs to the diurnal, so their opposition crosses the sect boundary, and the older astrologers judged its temper partly by which sect held the figure. Mars, the faster body, applies to Jupiter and perfects the aspect. The two were counted broadly sympathetic, both fiery and outgoing in the traditional scheme, which tempered the reading of even their opposition. Modern practitioners describe the polarity as assertive drive set against the urge to expand or believe, energy meeting confidence, with any difficulty framed as overconfidence or excess rather than affliction.
Classical reading
Ptolemy lists opposition as one of the five Ptolemaic aspects, formed by the diameter (180°). Classically described as obstructive or confrontational.
Modern reading
Modern reading: polarity and projection. The two bodies pull in opposite directions, asking for balance between contrasting principles.
