♂ Mars △ Trine ♃ Jupiter
120° · major aspect · harmonious · default orb ±7°
The trine of Mars and Jupiter relates the planet of action and courage to the greater benefic across a shared element, an angle Ptolemy grouped among the harmonious. Mars signifies force, enterprise, and the martial arts, Jupiter expansion, law, and favor, and the tradition reads their trine as vigor guided by good judgment, boldness that serves worthy ends. Medieval sources tie the pair to successful enterprise, leadership in war and law, sport, and confident action rewarded. Because Jupiter tempers Martial heat with proportion and Mars lends Jupiter's benevolence energy, the combination is associated in older texts with the effective commander and the just, decisive man of affairs.
Traditional reading
Jupiter belongs to the diurnal sect and Mars to the nocturnal, so authors read the trine as best balanced when the chart clearly favors one, Jupiter checking the excess Mars shows out of sect. Mars, the faster of the two, applies to Jupiter and forms the figure. Reception colors it where Mars occupies Sagittarius or Pisces, Jupiter's houses, or Jupiter sits in Aries or Scorpio, Mars's domiciles, or in Cancer where Jupiter is exalted. Older authors held that Jupiter dignifies Martial force into worthy action; the trine is its most fortunate expression.
Classical reading
Ptolemy classifies the trine as one of the harmonious aspects, formed by signs of the same triplicity (element). Considered fortunate.
Modern reading
Modern reading: effortless flow between two principles. Often described as flowing, supportive, sometimes complacent.
