Mars Sextile Jupiter

60° · major aspect · harmonious · default orb ±5°

Classical manuals read the sextile of Mars and Jupiter as enterprise crowned with favor. Mars supplies heat, courage, and the will to contend; Jupiter supplies increase, judgment, and honor; joined by the harmonious sixty-degree angle, the lesser malefic works in the benefic's service. William Lilly and the medieval authors tie such configurations to success in litigation and war, preferment through bold action, athletic and military distinction, and wealth won by venture rather than inheritance. The aspect is traditionally considered easy, with the sextile's reputation for opportunity fitting a pair the sources associate with campaigns, expeditions, and causes pursued openly.

Traditional reading

Mars, the faster planet, applies to Jupiter, a direction of motion the horary tradition treats as the martial party seeking the judge's favor. Sect divides them, Jupiter belonging to the day team and Mars to the night, so the pair never shares a sect, and Hellenistic doctrine would ask which partner enjoys home conditions in a given chart. There is also a soft reception channel, Mars being exalted in Capricorn while Jupiter rules the adjacent wealth of Sagittarius and Pisces; later authors mostly note instead that Jupiter's aspect was held to bridle Mars, converting harm to boldness.

Classical reading

Ptolemy classifies the sextile as a minor harmonious aspect, formed by signs of compatible polarity (both masculine or both feminine).

Modern reading

Modern reading: easy collaboration. Two principles cooperate, often requiring some initiative to activate.
