A square between the two benefics was the gentlest hard aspect the classical tradition recognized, and Venus square Jupiter shows why the old authors qualified rather than condemned it. Venus signifies pleasure, love, and ornament; Jupiter signifies increase, faith, and patronage; at the quartile their gifts compound past measure. The testimony of the sources runs to extravagance, feasting, expenditure on beauty, and generosity that outstrips means, faults of abundance rather than malice. Domains tied to the pair include the arts and their patrons, luxury trades, weddings and festivals, and the courts where favor is dispensed too freely.
Traditional reading
Venus applies to Jupiter, the quicker benefic approaching the greater one. Sect divides them: Jupiter leads the diurnal team and Venus the nocturnal, so whichever chart holds the square, one benefic operates in its preferred half of the day and the other out of it, a balance older doctrine used to fine-tune the judgment. Medieval writers repeated the maxim that benefics at hard aspect still assist, only clumsily. Modern practitioners describe the square as overpromising and indulgence, often noting it appears in charts of hosts, promoters, and aesthetes more than in afflicted ones.
