How this calculator works

The calculator returns Mercury's tropical sign at your birth minute, or across your whole birth date if you leave the time out. It reports retrograde when Mercury's longitude was decreasing at that moment.

Positions come from Astronomy Engine (VSOP87), the same code that drives the birth chart calculator.

Questions

Why is my Mercury sign always close to my Sun sign?
Seen from Earth, Mercury never gets more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. So your Mercury sign is either your Sun sign or one of the two signs next to it.
Was I born during Mercury retrograde?
The result says so directly. The calculator compares Mercury's position six hours before and after your birth moment and reports retrograde when its longitude was decreasing. Without a birth time it checks local noon. Mercury turns retrograde about three times a year for roughly three weeks, so around one birth in five falls in a retrograde period.
Do I need my birth time for my Mercury sign?
Usually not. Mercury spends two to three weeks in a sign, longer around a retrograde, so it changes sign on only a few days a year. If you were born on one of them, the calculator shows the local time of the change.
Is my birth data saved anywhere?
No. The sign is computed by JavaScript in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. The page link keeps your date and place so you can come back to the result, so share that link only with people you would tell your birthday to.
